Expert Guidance
If the next Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) or North American Hazardous Materials Management Association (NAHMMA) training schedule or location does not meet your needs, SWA staff can provide trainings at times and places convenient to you. We have been deeply involved with developing and delivering a number of HHW trainings to professionals in the US since the early 1990s. SWA has worked closely with both SWANA and NAHMMA developing and delivering HHW/VSGQ trainings in collaboration with subject matter experts from across the US. HHW/CESQG Collection Facility Design Workshops
David Nightingale has assisted local jurisdictions plan for and develop systems for management of HHW and VSQG wastes since 1987. In the early 1990’s he developed presentations regarding the state-of-the-art HHW/VSQG collection operations and design. This lead the to development of an all-day workshop focused on collection facility design. This was followed by the creation of the HHW Collection Facility Design Guide – Charting Your Path Through the Household Hazardous Waste Facility Design Process which now serves as the text for the all-day design workshops.
The intended audience for the workshop are those contemplating or already involved with the facility design process who may or may not be design professionals. The workshop helps ramp up HHW/VSQG professionals and their designers on both how the design process works and key points to consider before and during the formal design process. Real world good and poor (anonymous) examples from existing facilities and hands-on exercises help drive home the workshop key points. It is not uncommon for participants to attend subsequent workshops as they experience different phases of the facility development process and have different issues and questions.
SWA has provided this workshop across the country at national and regional conferences as well as for individual jurisdiction’s staff and local stakeholders.

24-Hr. HHW/VSQG Operations Health and Safety Course (“HAZWOPER”)
This course provides a baseline of materials applicable to any HHW/VSQG operations and is often adjusted to include state specific requirements.
This 24 Hr. training is required by some state’s waste management or health and safety regulations for managers and staff of HHW/VSQG collection activities.
The 24-Hr HHW/VSQG operations health and safety course was modeled after the training elements for hazardous waste workers at superfund clean-up and hazardous waste treatment, storage and disposal facilities (TSDFs). That training is required by OSHA’s Title 29 CFR, Section 1910.120 (HAZWOPER) rules. The HHW/VSQG version was adapted by an expert panel in the mid-1990s to be appropriate for HHW collection operations. The HHW version of the OSHA training has been updated to reflect new information and changing DOT and other regulations.
This 24-Hr. HHW/VSQG OSHA course is considered a core training by NAHMMA for professionals and staff with responsibility for HHW/VSQG collection operations.
David Nightingale was one of the co-authors of the original as well as subsequent revisions of the national HHW/VSQG operations health and safety (HAZWOPER) training manual. He continues as a lead instructor for the course offered periodically by NAHMMA and SWANA. SWA also independently provides this course to state or local jurisdictions and collection operators.
SWA staff worked with SWANA in the developing their certification for HHW&CESQG operations. The 24-Hr. HHW/VSQG training manual and course are considered the best resources to prepare for taking the SWANA certification test.
